The Monster Hunter ‘Redwing’ Great Sword.
This monstrosity was cooked up from playing an obscene amount of Monster Hunter. A game that cycled through SONY and NINTENDO’s many consoles, both static and portable. In the original game it’s called ‘Redwing‘, but in some of the later games, such as Monster Hunter World, it’s called ‘Red Wing’.
The Base of the Great Sword is constructed from a light weight timber called White wood.
The blade tip and teeth are made from a dense hardwood and the handle from an oak dowel (quite thick) for rigidity.
The complete outside has slowly been covered in 2mm EVA craft foam to provide texture and depth, to then apply its heavy paint job.
This project has really come out better than I had imagined, however, the weight of the sword is incredible and may need re-thinking in terms of materials to make it lighter and more compact, while still being strong and durable as a possible future adaptation.
Using hardwood as a choice of material for durability has ensured it doesn’t damage easily, but for future reference I would be looking at a light weight option either fiberglass, self skinning expanding foam or moulded resin fixtures adhered to an EVA foam base.
