I made this Wooden Poké ball with stand for a good friend of mine as a rather belated Christmas present (thanks coronavirus).

As my friend is such a big fan of the franchise (Pokémon), I looked up some reference photos and decided to incorporate a few ideas.

One half of the Wooden Poké ball was made from sycamore, the other from a deep red wood called cocobolo. Both halves were glued together and turned on the lathe. A hole was drilled out on the front at midway, and a sycamore plug was cut and inserted in the drilled hole to form the button.

I used a black acrylic paint in the recessed areas to emphasise the two halves and the Poké ball release button. (sorry, but this ball does not release a Pokémon) and finished off with a spray satin lacquer.

This was an interesting project to work out on the lathe, getting the Poké ball to look spherical was certainly a task! It also required careful planning due to working with two different woods which cut very differently on the lathe. All in all, I think it came out pretty well. I’d quite like to have a go at some other Pokémon projects. Maybe some other Poké ball designs in the future using alternative woods and more intensive paint jobs.
